Etta Mae Samuel, daughter of Viola Burgess Simmons and John Otto Simmons, was born on May 20, 1943, in Arran, Wakulla County, Florida, and
was called home to rest on November 20, 2024.
Etta joined the House of God Church and accepted Jesus Christ as her savior at a young age and expressed her acceptance and belief throughout her life and before going home.
Etta was an educator. She adored children and focused on the importance of their education. She graduated from Florida A&M University with a bachelor’s degree at age 20, having skipped two grades prior going to college. She taught middle school prior to working with the Head Start Program for 45 years, to include training and administration.
Etta loved her family. She was always kind, non-
judgmental, and displayed God’s love and grace at all times. She would always say, “I understand people.”
Etta is preceded in death by her parents, Viola Burgess Simmons and John Otto Simmons; sister, Corine (Peggy) McClendon; brothers, James Simmons and John (Bud) Simmons, Jr.; nephews, Fletcher McClendon, Jr. (Cathleen and daughter, Cori McClendon) and Alfred (Vern) Lindsey (Kawanda and son A.J.
