Gloria Jean (Glo) Jones was born on April 7, 1950, to the late Mary Ruth Jones Dunbar and the late Johnnie Johnson, Sr., both of Bradenton, Florida. Gloria Jean attended Manatee County schools throughout her education, receiving her diploma from the adult high school program.
Gloria Jean enjoyed life, music, and dancing while raising her three children. She was a lifetime member of Carter Temple C.M.E. Church, Bradenton, serving on various auxiliaries. Gloria Jean’s main love was serving as the president of the missionary board and being a delegate at church conferences. While we grieve her sudden passing, we find peace and comfort in knowing that she has gained her wings and is in the arms of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
Preceding Gloria Jean in death are her son, Alvin/AJ of Bradenton; mother, Mary Ruth Dunbar Jones of Bradenton; father, Johnnie Jones, Sr., of Bradenton; sisters, Christina Williams of Bradenton and Phyllis Dunbar Stargeant of Atlanta; aunts, LeRosa (Sista) Lattimore and Nell Jones of Bradenton, Elizabeth Stewart of New York City; uncles, Allen Jones of Bradenton, Frank (Buddy) Jones of Anderson, AL; and nephew, Jamaar Mckenzie of Atlanta. Gloria Jean’s passing came just hours before the passing of her dear cousin, Clarence (CJ) Jones of St. Thomas, VI. In the hearts of family, Gloria Jean, with loving wings, welcomed CJ into heaven. Gloria leaves behind memories of a fulfilled life with her children, Reginald (Ben) Jones and Earlene Jones of Bradenton; Grandson, Bobby Dawes Jr., Granddaughter, Sherril Moreland of Bradenton; Great grandchildren, Bryce Dawes of Palmetto, FL, Markis Hayes, and Amani Johnson of Bradenton; sisters, Gayle Jones and Janice Dunbar Smith (Willie) of Bradenton, Carolyn Allen (Floyd) of Ocala; brothers, Stanley Dunbar of Atlanta, Johnnie Johnson, Jr., of Bradenton; brother-in-law, Ray Stargeant, Jr., of Atlanta; aunts, Josephine Jones of Rochester, NY, Betty Shannon of Palmetto, and Betty Mitchell of Rubonia; and nieces and nephews, Latrice Johnson, Latora Washington, and Montra Mckenzie of Atlanta, Yapracia Miller Mitchell (Chauncey) of Winter Haven, Karri Stephens of Bradenton, Ashley and Allison Dunbar of Kentucky.
Gloria Jean’s memory lives on through the many great nieces and nephews, cousins, and those who held a special place in her heart. Among her closest companions were her best friends, Bernice Robinson and Eva Leverett, who stood by her side and enriched family her life with enduring friendship. Gloria also formed meaningful connections with special friends and the devoted staff at Popi’s II Restaurant in Palmetto, Florida, where she was warmly regarded.
Gloria Jean leaves behind an everlasting legacy among the friends and family of Carter Temple C.M.E. Church. Her impact within the church community, as well as in the lives of her loved ones, will continue to be celebrated and remembered for generations.
