Jean Delores Murray-Ellenwood was born December 29, 1940, in Ellenton, FL to the late Oscar “Doc” Murray, and the late Leila Harrington. She departed her earthly home peacefully on March 23, 2025.
Jean was educated in the Manatee County Public Schools. She displayed her love for the arts; specifically, music and dance as a Majorette in grades five through seven. Later, she moved on to play the Clarinet in grades eighth through twelfth at Lincoln Memorial, in the Lincoln Memorial Trojans Marching Band. Jean always made sure that she was neatly dressed, and she received several best-dressed awards while attending School. She graduated from Lincoln Memorial High School in 1960. Upon graduating from High School, she briefly attended Gibbs Junior College in St. Petersburg before deciding to relocate to Rochester, NY. Jean gave her life to Christ at an early age, and she became a member of Providence Baptist Church in Palmetto. FL. Upon moving to Rochester, NY, she became a member of Aenon Baptist Church, and later moved her membership to Antioch Baptist Church, where she remained a member until recently moving back to Florida.
She began her career at Rochester Products and was a proud employee of the General Motors Corporation for thirty plus years. She would delightfully say that she acquired the skills of building engines, transmissions, and other vital parts for vehicles manufactured at the plant. She retired in 1999, and has enjoyed spending quality time with her family.
Jean was a loving mother to her three daughters, and an awesome grandmother to her grands and great grands. She loved Family Time, and she loved to travel. Her charming smile would brighten any room when she entered. She was affectionately called “Aunt Jean” or “Momma Jean” by many others because of her loving and giving character.
She was preceded in peaceful rest by her parents Oscar “Doc” Murray and Leila (Jesse) Ackerman. Her brother Charlie (Juanita) White, 1 st Cousin/Brother Ferrone Tarver, Sister, Charlyne Cromartie, her special aunt, Sarah Buchanan, and her best friend, Virginia Pearcey.
She leaves her lasting love and special memories for her three daughters: Kimela Ellenwood, Parrish, FL, Bridgette Ellenwood, Rochester, NY, and Fern Ellenwood, Parrish, FL, a very special bonus son, Garfield Ellenwood, II (Joycelyn), Tallahassee, FL. Her Grandchildren: Johnny Morris, IV, Shacoia Pompey, Ke’Mishia Pompey, Antoine Anderson, Natasha Pompey, Diamond Ellenwood, and Joshua Gaddy. Great Grandchildren: Ke’Vion Mitchell, Ryana Cotton, Destini Morris, Chadwick Ellenwood, Zakiyah Thomas, Ineejah Morris, Messias Dunbar, Nikoli Morris, Ny’ Arii Morris, Aubree
Brown, Mylasia Lewis, and Memphis Dunbar. One Sister of Rochester, NY, Dorothy Scott (Rohalia), One Brother of Bradenton, FL, James White, Sr (Jeanette), and Brother-in-law of Rochester, NY, Bobby Ellenwood. Three nieces: Johnyta (Bruce) Kelly, Asonte Ellenwood, and Jon’a Duval (Damon), whom she had a very special and dear
relationship with. Five Nephews: Johnny Carter, Russell White (Eleanor), Charlie Anthony White, whom she shared a strong bond with, James White, Jr (Trish), and Jarvis White.
She loved her entire Murray Family, and they were very dear to her; she would oftenmimic her Aunt Sarah’s saying; “hey kinfolk”. A special cousin and confidant, Mildred “Chippie” Barton (Harold).
She also leaves her lasting love and special memories for her special friends: Janet McCarter (Rochester, NY), Mayetta Hudson and James Bennett (Palmetto, FL), and a host of other sorrowing family members, and friends.
