Joe Houston Sr. was born March 28, 1938, in Palmetto, Florida to the late Robert Houston Sr. and Annie Mae Houston.
He attended Lincoln Memorial High School in Palmetto, Florida and was the first in his immediate family to graduate at the high school level. He began his working career as a migrant farm worker and later became the owner/operator of Houston Trucking Company and Houston Auto Repair. He loved base- ball. He played catcher and shortstop as a member of the East Manatee Baseball League. He also had a love for driving, especially 18- wheeler semi-trucks. He was well known for his superb driving ability; a skill that he taught his sons. Joe gave his life to Christ during his early adulthood where he remained faithful. He was a member of Christian Retreat Family Church for over 40 years where he actively served by teaching Sunday School lessons and driving for the church bus ministry. He was known as a reliable friend. He was loved and respected by many for his unique perspective on life and his jovial attitude. His sense of humor was one of a kind. He could make light of most situations through his funny jokes. He was truly the comedian of the family. Joe had several favorite hangouts where he could be found sharing business advice with the local guys, playing check- ers or dominos and having a good laugh.
He is preceded in death by his loving and devoted wife, Dorothy Presha Houston, of 60 years; brother, George Houston Sr., sis- ters, Veora Thomas and Lora Goff.
He leaves to cherish his memories, Children: Ronnie (Michelle) Houston Sr., Glen (Renee) Evans Sr., Debra Love, Cassandra “Kaye” (Myron) Mays, Kurt Evans, Beverly “Cookie” (David) Rogers, Carlton (Sundae) Houston Sr., Gwendolyn Smith, Cedric Houston Sr., Loretta McKnight, Joe (Florence) Houston Jr., Brittany Marshall and Elaine Jones; Brothers: Robert (Angela) Houston Jr., Kirkward (Jacqueline) Houston Sr., Renay (Gwendolyn) Houston Sr. and Marlon Houston Sr. Sisters: Vivian Hamilton and Cleomie Shelly, 33 grandchildren and 67 great-grandchildren. Brothers-in-law: Rubin Goff, Walter “Mickey ”Presha Sr., Lonnie Dixon. Sisters-in-law: Pearlese Houston, Mildred Duncan, Loretta (Richard) Lipp and a host
of nieces, nephews, cousins and many close friends.
