Katrissa Hornes, 55, of Apollo Beach, Florida, passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 6, 2024, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Riverview, Florida. Born on August 14, 1969, in Bradenton, Florida, to Lovie Gissendanner and Arnold Nelson, Katrissa was a proud resident of Manatee County for over 30 years. Her life’s journey also took her to Evanston, Illinois, Chicago, Illinois, Jacksonville, Florida, and Ruskin, Florida. Katrissa worked as an executive assistant to various CEOs and CFOs in the healthcare industry, a role she performed with dedication and excellence. Her passion for helping others was evident in her volunteer work at church and in her willingness to assist family and friends. She found joy in making others happy and took immense pride in every task she undertook, offering food, comfort, and love to everyone she encountered.
Katrissa accepted Jesus Christ as her Savior at an early age and lived her life grounded in her faith. She found comfort in gospel music and cherished sharing her deep faith in God with her child. Her love for music, singing, and dancing was infectious, and she was often the light of any gathering, always surrounded by the people she loved. A woman of boundless generosity and kindness, Katrissa’s compassion knew no limits. She gave freely to those in need, often without them asking, offering whatever she had to help. Her selfless nature was one of her defining qualities, and she cared deeply for everyone in her life. From being recognized as “best dressed” in high school to having the honor of meeting George W. Bush, Katrissa’s charisma and dedication left an indelible mark on all who knew her. Her warmth and ability to connect with others impacted countless lives, and her legacy continues to inspire excellence in those around her.
Katrissa is survived by her loving daughter, Brittany Hornes; brothers, Cedric Nelson and Derrick Nelson; sister, Brandy Johnson; goddaughters, Destiny Bikandu, Miracle Hinton, and Jasmine Santana; and life-long friend, Joseph Cagle.
