Laura Mae Wells Dawes was born April 15, 1940 to the
late Charles Wells and Laura Mae Wells in Huttonville (Eufala) Oklahoma. On February 2, 2023, at Manatee Memorial Hospital, Laura left this world to live in eternity in a city whose builder and maker is God.
She was raised in a large family with eight siblings. She was affec- tionately called “Tiny” by her family in Oklahoma and “Grammy” by her children and grandchildren and many others whose lives she touched in Manatee County. She attended school in Eufala, Oklahoma and graduated from Booker T. Washington High School in 1958.
She accepted Jesus Christ as her personal savior and was baptized at a young age. She had a love for studying God’s Word and talking with those she came in contact with. She also was very faithful in her daily devotion with God, and believed in supporting various charities.
She moved to Bradenton, Florida in 1966 from Kansas City, Missouri. Laura married the late Bobbie D. Dawes in 1980. She studied and became a CNA and worked hard for 40 years in Manatee County.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Katherine Jamerson and Minola Johnson and a brother, Arthur Wells; A grandson, Brandon Lazier.
She leaves to cherish her memories three daughters: Carla Range (Clifford), Phyllis Lazier and Paula Washington all of Bradenton; A stepson, Artis Jefferson; 5 grandchildren, Javon Carter, Sr. (Nicole), Clifford Range, Jr., Karla Simon, Darion Lazier, Jr., and Deshawn Simon; Eight great grandchildren and one great great grandchild; One sister, Mary Cunningham; Three brothers, Walter Kizzie, Charles Wells, and Wallace Finks. Three special friends, Doris Bell, Sharon Smith and Jackie Oslow. Like a son, Steven Belgrave and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
