Leonard Davis Johnson Obituary

Leonard Davis Johnson was born on June 10, 1952 in Sarasota, Florida to proud parents Albennie Davis Johnson and John Wesley Johnson. However, in 1957, when Leonard was just 5 years old, his father was tragically killed in an accident. In 1959, Albennie was remarried to Beresford Wesley Powell (deceased), who raised Leonard and his younger brother, Randy, as his own. Leonard matriculated through the Sarasota County Public School system spending his freshman year of high school at Booker High School. In his sophomore year, Leonard was involved in the integration of Sarasota High School where he spent both his sophomore and junior years. His final year of secondary education was completed at Forest Lake Academy in central Florida. As an athlete who was especially skilled in basketball, Leonard could be found on the court both at school and during his free time.
After graduating from high school, Leonard had a brief stint in the US Army before returning to Sarasota where he worked with his dad refining the carpentry and construction skills that he had learned as a youth.
As the oldest of 7 siblings, Leonard was always proud of his family and would often be seen cruising around town, at the beach, or at the park with a younger sister or brother in tow. Leonard was protective of his siblings and expected that they were all looking out for each other as he was looking out for them. If something happened to one of the siblings, and everyone didn’t respond, they would have to answer to him.
In 1998 on Valentine’s day, Leonard married his love, Ellen “Anita” Millhouse and his loving spirit continued to be evident as he went on to help raise her sons and grandchildren. And, though Leonard’s journey was often not easy, he was friendly & outgoing. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends some of whom would call him “Pops” . Leonard leaves behind a legacy of caring that his family and friends will treasure.
After a brief illness, Leonard went to his rest on Sunday May 5, 2024 surrounded by family who were sharing some of their favorite stories with him. Leonard was preceded in death by his father, John Wesley Johnson, his stepfather, Beresford Wesley Powell, and his son Mario Jermaine Bradshaw and stepson, Wade Lindsey Jr.
Leonard will be lovingly remembered as the:
Husband of Anita Johnson, Son of Albennie Powell, “Pops” to Jesse Lindsey, Bahattan Lindsey, & Tremaine Lindsey. Grandfather of Starr Axavier Bradshaw, Crystal Nicole Bradshaw, Malik Justice Bradshaw, Madison Lee Bradshaw, Jessie Lindsy, Jr. and Tiera Lindsey. Great grandfather of Jordan Bradshaw, Skylar Bradshaw,Travolla Bradshaw, Alanah Bradshaw, Lennix Bradshaw, and La’Loni Bradshaw. Brother of Randy O. Johnson, Sr., Debra M. Powell, Hortense E. Martin, Gwendolyn A. Braswell, Beresford W. Powell, Jr, and Maceo B. Powell. Uncle of numerous nieces and nephews. Cousin of many, Friend of even more, and Dog-Dad of Jade.
