Lorine “Lumpy” Brown was born on March 3, 1943, to the late Golden Reed, Sr., and Mrs. Carrie Reed. She passed away on January 23, 2026. Lorine attended Manatee County Schools and graduated from Lincoln Memorial High School, Palmetto, Florida, in 1960.
Lorine married her high school sweetheart, Nathaniel Brown, Sr. in 1960. They were married for 50 years before he proceeded her in death in 2010. To their union were born three children, Nathaniel, Jr., Tonya, and Dennis.
Lorine began her service to Christ at an early age and was baptized at St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church, Bradenton, Florida, by Reverend Royster. She served faithfully as the Church Clerk for 40 years. Lorine also served in many other capacities as a Deaconess, Sunday School Teacher, and a member of the Sr. Women’s Mission. Lorine worked in the Manatee County Schools briefly in an administrative capacity. She retired from Meals on Wheels after 25 plus years of services as an Executive Administrative Assistant.
Her love of education led her to pursue and obtain her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Religious Studies from Bethune Cookman University later in her life after raising her children and becoming a grandmother many times over. She graduated Cum Laude
Her love of community and service led her to become a member of her beloved sorority, Gamma Rho Zeta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta, Inc. She loved her “Zeta Blue” and served faithfully in the organization in many capacities
Lorine was a dedicated professional and united with the Royal Sara-Mana Club, Inc., to continue in her desire of uplifting her community and education. She encouraged and supported the youth in her family and community to achieve their very best. Lorine remained active in her community, staying abreast of issues that impacted her community and her people. She participated in the school board meetings, county and district meetings, and was known to ’raise a concern’. She was instrumental in her daughter, Tonja, receiving the honor of Tonja McKinney Day in recognition of her athletic accomplishments.
Lorine leaves behind to cherish her memory her daughter, Tonja McKinney (Johnnie) of Palmetto, FL, her son, Dennis Brown, Sr. (Shayron) of Lithonia, GA, her step-daughter, Kimberly Brooks of Bradenton, FL, three loving sisters, Vera Byrd (Jerry) of Sarasota, FL, Eunice Reed of St. Petersburg, FL, and Betty Lou Lightner of San Diego, CA; three beloved sisters-in-law, Dorothy Williams and Joyce Mathis, both of Bradenton, FL, and Neacy Williams of Palmetto, FL; her grandchildren, who are her pride and joy: Kevin Brown (Cassandra), Latronya Williams (Deshane), Chris Hart and Jonathan McKinney, all of Bradenton, FL, Jeremiah McKinney (Helena) of Nashville, TN, Darius Brown of Lithonia, GA, Jessica McKinney of Richmond, VA, and Dennis Brown, Jr. (Coniah) of Twentynine Palms, CA; nineteen great-grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews and other loving friends and relatives.
Public viewing and visitation will be held on Friday, January 30th, 6-8 P.M. at Westside Funeral Home, 204 7th St. West, Palmetto, FL. The Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, January 31st at 11 o’clock A.M. at St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church, 525 9th Ave. E., Bradenton, FL.
